Topic: Raising Independent Children in a Fear Based World
Everywhere American parents turn, we are bombarded with messages about what a scary and dangerous world we are raising our children in today. As a result, our fears keep us from allowing children to take the natural risks and experience the typical failures that are part of growing up. We underestimate at what ages it is appropriate to allow increasing freedoms and often don’t even expect them to master certain basic life skill competencies. These trends are beginning to create generations of highly risk averse young adults who lack problem solving skills and who do not have confidence in their own decision-making abilities. Without these building blocks to self-sufficiency, it is almost impossible for them to achieve general long-term independence and success.
In this seminar we will examine the following:
– Why our children are safer than we think
– What responsibilities should we be giving to children at different ages
– How do we teach our children(and ourselves) to take calculated risks
– How can we foster our children’s independence in other ways and regain some of our sanity in the process
Topic: How The Misunderstood Self-Esteem Movement is Undermining Our Parenting
As parents in today’s world, it feels as if one of our primary parental duties is to serve as constantly vigilant cheerleaders for our children. Always hovering and waiting for any opportunity to praise every achievement, no matter how small. We fear failing to supply a never-ending stream of positive reinforcement will result in children unable to fully realize their potential. However, it appears that our efforts to perpetually boost our children’s’ self-esteem are actually undermining their ability to become successful, independent adults. How do we reverse this trend and raise empowered children rather than entitled ones?
During this seminar we will learn:
– The History of the Self Esteem Movement
– Why a Growing Number of Child Psychologists are Speaking Out Against It
– What the difference is between Healthy and High Self Esteem
– How to Parent for Empowerment rather than Entitlement

Understanding Your Child’s Mind-Body Type Through the Ancient Science of Ayurveda– Ayurveda means “knowledge of Life”. Come hear as Tess Chiodo, owner of Joyful Yoga, explains how the diverse differences in her three daughters, only a year apart in age, but so different not only physically but also in personality led her to Ayurveda. She realized that learning this information at an earlier age could have prevented much misunderstanding in raising them and in their own understanding of their body and mind, and how this could contribute in a powerful positive way to their self-esteem. When you understand the science of Ayurveda you can also use it to help you understand yourself and your children more clearly too.
